Baptista R, Onzi E, Goulart N, Dos Santos LD, Makarewicz G, Vaz M. Effects of Concentric Versus Eccentric Strength Training on the Elderly’s Knee Extensor Structure and Function. JEPonline 2016;19(3):120-132. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of eccentric vs. concentric 12-wk strength training program on the quadriceps properties of elderly men. Twenty-three subjects performed unilateral concentric knee extension on one side and eccentric knee flexion on the contralateral side at 80% of 5 RM. Both protocols increased knee extensor strength. Vastus lateralis fascicle length decreased and pennation angle increased without changes in muscle thickness in both protocols. Patellar tendon length increased after both protocols, but tendon cross-sectional area increased only post-eccentric training. Isometric and dynamic torque increased in both groups. Concentric and eccentric training can be used with similar results in older adults.

Effects of Concentric and Eccentric Strength Training on Electromyography Activity of the Knee Agonist –Antagonist Muscle
Purpose: An appropriate activity of the knee agonist -antagonist muscles is important to resist against abnormal abduction-adduction moments loads around knee joint and reduce the risk of knee injuries. Exercise training has been commonly used as an intervention to improve neuromuscular activity within the synergic and/or agonist-antagonist muscles. However, maximizing the effectiveness of exer...
متن کاملTime course of neuromuscular adaptations to knee extensor eccentric training.
This study investigated the chronology of neural and morphological adaptations to knee extensor eccentric training and their contribution to strength gains in isometric, concentric and eccentric muscle actions. 20 male healthy subjects performed a 12-week eccentric training program on an isokinetic dynamometer, and neuromuscular evaluations of knee extensors were performed every 4 weeks. After ...
متن کاملEffects of Early Combined Eccentric-Concentric Versus Concentric Resistance Training Following Total Knee Arthroplasty
Objective To investigate the effects of early combined eccentric-concentric (ECC-CON) or concentric (CON) resistance training following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods Patients who underwent a primary TKA were randomly assigned to an ECC-CON group (n=16) or a CON group (n=18). All patients received early, progressive resistance training with five sessions per week for 2 weeks starting ...
متن کاملSuperior Effects of Eccentric to Concentric Knee Extensor Resistance Training on Physical Fitness, Insulin Sensitivity and Lipid Profiles of Elderly Men
It has been reported that eccentric training of knee extensors is effective for improving blood insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles to a greater extent than concentric training in young women. However, it is not known whether this is also the case for elderly individuals. Thus, the present study tested the hypothesis that eccentric training of the knee extensors would improve physical functi...
متن کاملThe influence of resistance exercise with emphasis on specific contractions (concentric vs. eccentric) on muscle strength and post-exercise autonomic modulation: a randomized clinical trial
BACKGROUND Compared to eccentric contractions, concentric contractions result in higher cardiovascular stress. However, we do not know how these two types of contractions influence cardiac autonomic modulation during the post-exercise recovery period. OBJECTIVE to compare the effect of resistance training that is performed with concentric vs. eccentric emphasis on muscle strength and on post-...
